Harney brace seals victory for Blues

29 January 2023

Pompey Women fought from behind to win at Bridgwater and close the gap on National League leaders Oxford.

Ellie Sara had fired the hosts into the lead early in the second half, but a brace from Anaisa Harney ensured the points headed back to the south coast.

Jay Sadler made two changes from the side that beat Plymouth to reach the League Cup semi-finals a week earlier.

Nicole Barrett and Ava Rowbotham both returned to the starting line-up, with Ella Wild and Dani Lane making way.

It was United who made the brighter start and Hannah Haughton came charging off her line to deny Sara in the opening stages.

But the Blues soon clicked into get and when Harney raced onto Tierney Scott’s pass, her low effort was turned behind by Ellie Mitchell.

The keeper was called into action again on 15 minutes, this time gathering Rowbotham’s shot from the edge of the box.

There were not an abundance of clear-cut chances, although Fiona Barry cleared the crossbar for the hosts.

Mitchell then made another save at the opposite end of the pitch, but was not overly troubled by Sophie Quirk’s attempt.

And, just before the break, a spell of relentless pressing saw Harney steal possession and find Quirk, whose close-range shot was held by Mitchell.

Just like the first half, it was Bridgwater who came charging out of the blocks and Haughton did well to deny Sara.

Again Pompey hit back, though, with Quirk cutting inside and curling in a shot that was parried away by Mitchell.

But they fell behind just before the hour mark, as the home side broke up the pitch and Sara fired home.

United’s lead lasted a matter of seconds, however, as Jazz Younger’s long pass from the kick-off was collected by HARNEY and calmly slotted into the net.

The Blues now wanted to build momentum and when Izzy Collins met a Taylor Macdonald corner, her effort flew narrowly past the post.

And they did have the lead on 69 minutes, with Leanne Bell bringing down Barrett’s throw and laying the ball off for HARNEY to find the top corner from the edge of the box.

Bridgwater tried to hit back, but Emily Wilson-White and Daisy Ackerman both fired wide as Pompey claimed the win.
