Jess Smith Becomes First Team Player

Midfielder graduates from development side

12 January 2023

Jess Smith has become the second ever Pompey Women player to graduate from the development side into the first team.

She follows in the footsteps of Freya Jones, who left the Blues in the summer to complete a scholarship in America.

The 16-year-old has been around the senior fold since December, but this move will mean that she will now train and be involved with the side on a consistent basis.

The midfielder will take the number 15 shirt and is expected to feature in the squad for this Sunday's clash with Ipswich.

“We’re really excited at the prospect of working more closely with Jess, and ultimately supporting her holistic development within our environment.”

Jay Sadler

Smith said: “I’m extremely grateful to have this opportunity. This has always been the next goal, so to have made the step already is really pleasing.

“It’s been really good to be around the girls, so to be able to do this on a consistent basis provides me with the opportunity to keep learning, on and off the pitch.”

Blues boss Jay Sadler said: “We were first made aware of Jess when playing out of Pompey in the Community’s BTEC programme.

“Our development squad coaches were impressed and have since done some fantastic work to embed her within our setup.

“Although still young, Jess has an abundance of charisma and has shown a great attitude towards learning. She has impressive physical qualities and high technical proficiencies.

“We’re really excited at the prospect of working more closely with Jess, and ultimately supporting her holistic development within our environment.”

Pompey Women are next in action this Sunday (January 15) when they host Ipswich at Westleigh Park. Tickets can be purchased online here.
