Blues exit FA Cup to Championship opponents

Pompey exited the Women’s FA Cup with a narrow defeat at Championship leaders London City Lionesses.

Shanade Hopcroft’s scrappy goal in the first half settled the third round contest at Dartford’s Prince Park.

Jay Sadler made one change from the side that beat Oxford to progress in the League Cup before Christmas, with Leanne Bell replacing Tierney Scott.

And the visitors made bright start, with Sophie Quirk collecting Anaisa Harney’s pass and cutting inside before seeing her shot blocked.

But they were soon indebted to Hannah Haughton at the other end, as the keeper kept out Sarah Ewens’ effort from the edge of the box before saving Jamie-Lee Napier’s follow-up.

The hosts did break the deadlock in somewhat controversial fashion on 15 minutes, however, when Hopcroft sent a free-kick into the box.

Nicole Barrett appeared to clear the ball from the line, only for the officials to eventually decide that it had crossed.

Hopcroft then went close to doubling the Lionesses’ lead in more conventional fashion, courtesy of a deflected effort that was turned wide by a diving Haughton.

Pompey were looking to fight back, though, and Dani Lane forced keeper Shae Yanez into action after being slipped through by Annie Rolf.

A Danielle Rowe corner was then not properly dealt with and Bell’s effort had to be tipped over the bar.

The visitors remained on the attack once the action restarted and a teasing Quirk delivery narrowly evaded both Harney and Bell.

But there were still threats to contend with at the other end and Lucy Shepherd’s cross was turned just wide by Napier.

With the rain pouring down, conditions were difficult for both sides and Sadler brought on reinforcements from the bench.

Celebrations were cut short when Rolf did have the ball in the net on 78 minutes, though, as a flag was raised for offside.

Pompey almost made the most of the slippery conditions when Yanez spilled a Barrett cross, but the hosts managed to scramble behind.

The Lionesses were resorting to trying to use up as many seconds as possible by running the ball into the corners.

And those tactics worked, as they held on for the final few minutes to ensure the plucky Blues exited the competition.
