Morrell: Scabby Goal, But We Earned It

Midfielder opened his Blues account against Exeter

Fratton Park has seen some sensational goals down the years – and then there was Joe Morrell’s effort against Exeter.

The midfielder’s shot was somehow allowed to bobble over the line by goalkeeper Jamal Blackman to seal a 2-0 victory at Fratton Park.

It came after a fine volley from Marlon Pack had opened the scoring and ensured that John Mousinho made a winning start to life as Pompey’s head coach.

Morrell felt that the home side deserved their slice of luck, however, to put a run of disappointing results behind them.

The Wales international said: “It was definitely needed and it’s great to be able to speak on a happier note after a match.

“We haven’t been the worst team in the world over the past couple of months – even if it might have felt like that – and we’re not the best team in the world after this result.

“There’s still a long way to go and hopefully we can use it a springboard because we’ve got a tough week ahead of us.

“Sometimes things just start breaking for you – my goal was a case in point because it was hardly an unstoppable shot!

“But we’ve been due a little bit of luck because it’s evaded us this season and it was nice to have a scabby one go in.

“It was a better performance, though, and so you earn that good fortune. We got into better areas, were more positive and found more solutions.

“That’s off the back of one training session with the new head coach, so it gives us optimism for the future.”

Mousinho is embarking on his first role in charge after being appointed on Friday, but has got the backing of Morrell.

He said: “We knew the club were searching far and wide and we trusted the powers that be to find the best solution.

“The new head coach came in for the first session on Friday and probably put a more onus on us and a little less focus on the opposition.

“It’s a fresh voice and a fresh start – sometimes that’s all you need. I’ve played against him before and we knew he was well respected in the game.

“I think it’s good that the club are trying something different and both Andy and Rich have a good track record when it comes to appointing head coaches.”
