Morrell: We Have To Impose Ourselves

Midfielder looks ahead to FA Cup tie at Tottenham

5 January 2023

Almost 9,000 Pompey fans will be congregating on the capital this weekend to watch their side in Emirates FA Cup action.

And with Tottenham the understandable favourites to progress to the fourth round, many will just want to savour the experience of watching their side in action at such a superb venue.

Joe Morrell is among those looking forward to the event, but is not merely treating the tie as a grand day out.

The Wales international midfielder insists that the Blues have to believe they are capable of causing an upset.

He said: “It’s really exciting and is a fixture this club haven’t had for a long time, so it’s a fantastic opportunity for the supporters to enjoy the day.

“I’m sure it will feel like a home game in a massive stadium that’s up there with the very best in the world.

“Tottenham are full of world class players and you have to get that balance right between enjoying the experience and imposing ourselves on the game.

“I’m not a fan of going into matches feeling too comfortable and I’m sure that won’t be the case on Saturday.

“Every team has weaknesses and it’s up to us to expose them, but of course it’s going to be a massive challenge.

“I’ve come up against most of these players before and understand the quality. We’ve seen upsets over the years, though, and it’s an opportunity for us to show how good we are.”

It was announced earlier in the week that the club had parted company with Danny and Nicky Cowley.

Morrell said: “All of the lads were disappointed. The manager was a big reason for me signing with this club and you won't find two harder working coaches in football.

“We wanted it to work for him here and have to take a collective responsibility for why it hasn’t. We have to look at ourselves and what we could have done better as a group.

“There are high expectations at this club – and rightly so. We can understand why fans have been frustrated.

“We’ve spoken with Andy Cullen and Rich Hughes and trust them to come to the best decision for this football club.

“Someone will come in now with a fresh voice and sometimes that’s all you need. There’s a good set of lads here and there’s plenty of football left this season. That’s what we’re focusing on.”
