Blues progress to last four of League Cup

22 January 2023

Pompey Women eased into the semi-finals of the National League Cup with a 3-0 victory at Plymouth.

Goals from Sophie Quirk, Tierney Scott and Ella Humphrey saw the Blues take a step closer to securing some silverware.

Jay Sadler made three changes from the side that beat Ipswich in a league contest the previous week.

Ella Wild, Taylor Macdonald and Scott all came into the team, with Nicole Barrett, Ava Rowbotham and Leanne Bell dropping to the bench.

The visitors had an opportunity to take an early lead when Dani Lane got on the end of Macdonald’s cross, but Jasmine Read made the save.

But they did forge ahead midway through the first half, as QUIRK collected Jazz Younger’s ball, turned a defender and hit home a rocket from the edge of the box.

The Blues kept pushing forward in search of more goals and Younger fired a shot wide before Annie Rolf’s dangerous low cross had to be cleared behind.

There had been little to concern Hannah Haughton at the other end, although the keeper was equal to Amber Pollock’s close-range effort.

It was still Pompey causing more attacking problems and Quirk’s cross just escaped the reach of Scott at the back post.

The second half was just 10 minutes old when the visitors doubled their advantage, with Quirk’s delivery knocked down for SCOTT to slot into the net.

It was an uphill battle for Argyle now and Georgia Wilson’s volleyed effort was comfortably held by Haughton.

And the Blues were not done yet, with Read racing out to meet the onrushing Scott and seeing the ball loop over her head, bouncing narrowly past the post.

Scott had another excellent chance after racing through on goal, but Read got something behind the shot and Rosie Train was able to nod the loose ball clear.

Sadler turned to his bench and used all five substitutes to provide some fresh legs for the closing stages of the contest.

HUMPHREY was one of those introduced and she opened her Pompey account deep into stoppage-time, finding the target from a few yards out.

Pompey: Haughton; Wild, Younger, Rowe (c), Collins (Barrett 60); Lane (Rowbotham 73), Macdonald, Rolf; Scott (Goulden 80), Harney (Bell 80), Quirk (Humphrey 80)
