Bournemouth 2 Pompey Women 2

Blues draw latest pre-season friendly

23 July 2023

Pompey Women continued their unbeaten start to pre-season with a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth.

Goals from a trialist and Sophie Quirk saw the Blues battle from behind to lead in Ringwood, but the hosts levelled after the break.

Riva Casley featured after signing earlier in the week, while there was also a space for the returning Leeta Rutherford.

Trialist A had an early chance for the Blues, but her shot was saved and they fell behind just a few minutes later.

The referee pointed to the spot after a defender had collided with Izzy Collins and Hannah Haughton was unable to keep out the penalty.

But the reply was almost instantaneous, as Evie Gane stole possession and found Georgie Freeland, who slipped it down the line for Nicole Barrett.

She whipped in a cross that was only cleared as far as TRIALIST A, who smashed the ball home from the edge of the box.

And Pompey then took the lead straight from kick-off, with QUIRK cutting inside from the right and curling a shot into the net.

The visitors tried to extend their advantage further, but Quirk and Trialist A were both denied by the keeper.

Emma Jones was then fed by Izzy Collins and raced in from the left, only to see her effort turned away from goal.

The Blues continued to apply pressure once the action restarted and Tierney Scott was inches away from meeting Quirk’s delivery.

Kelci Bowers then surged down the right and picked out Jones, whose curler was blocked by a defender.

And the same player soon beat the keeper to a loose pass, with her effort trickling along the line before being hacked clear.

But Bournemouth were handed the chance to level with their second penalty of the game, despite the foul appearing to take place outside of the box.

Haughton looked to have come to the rescue with a smart save, but the loose ball was tucked away from a couple of yards out.

With rolling substitutions affecting the rhythm of the contest, it was still Pompey looking more likely to grab a winner.

Trialist A saw another strike repelled, while Ella Humphrey fired over the bar after Ella Wild’s free-kick had been cleared into her path.

Ali Hall was then sent racing through on goal by Dani Lane late on, but her drilled effort was saved to ensure the game finished all square.
