Cardiff 2 Pompey Women 7

Blues win latest friendly

30 July 2023

Pompey Women enjoyed a thumping 7-2 friendly victory over Cardiff in their latest pre-season contest.

Ali Hall, Emma Jones, Georgie Freeland, Jazz Younger, Ava Rowbotham, Tierney Scott and a trialist all found the target in south Wales.

The match was split into four 30-minute periods, with the Blues making use of rolling substitutions to give all their players a good workout.

It looked like the visitors had taken an early lead when Sophie Quirk glanced home a Nicole Barrett cross, but the flag was raised for offside.

Quirk then cut inside from the left and found Hall, whose close-range effort was well saved by Ceryn Chamberlain

And Quirk was involved again on 14 minutes, sending a low shot trickling inches past the post after some good combination play with Jones.

But the deadlock was broken just seconds later, as HALL managed to divert a drilled strike from Jones into the net.

Molly Kehoe instantly replied for the home side, however, and Hannah Haughton then denied Mackenzie Olden to stop them taking the lead.

Pompey soon got back on top and Barrett’s fierce attempt from the edge of the box was tipped over by Chamberlain.

End of first quarter: Cardiff 1 Pompey 1

The visitors restored their advantage soon after the restart, with JONES powering home Barrett’s delivery from a few yards out.

And it was extended on 48 minutes, when FREELAND arrived at the back post to convert Quirk’s cross.

They continued to dominate and when Quirk found space to shoot at the end of a twisting run, she thumped the ball against the post.

Half Time: Cardiff 1 Pompey 3

Both sides made plenty of changes for the second hour and it did not take long for the Blues to score again.

This time it was their TRIALIST who hit the target from the edge of the box after meeting Leeta Rutherford’s lifted pass.

Rutherford then had another assist for goal number five, sending in a corner that YOUNGER converted with a looping header.

The pair combined again a few minutes later, but this time Younger’s nodded effort was pushed over by Amelia Forkings.

Cardiff tried to hit back, but when Catherine Walsh was found in space, her attempt was hacked from the line by Barrett

End of third quarter: Cardiff 1 Pompey 5

Pompey kept pushing forward in the final half-hour, not content to simply consolidate their already commanding lead.

Scott was next to go close after driving purposefully into the area and her low strike was gathered by Forkings.

But the Bluebirds reduced their deficit before the clock hit the 100-minute mark, as Eliza Collie raced through to beat Haughton.

That was simply the cue for the visitors to step up a gear, however, with Scott stealing the ball and teeing-up ROWBOTHAM to fire home.

And Rowbotham soon returned the favour, picking out SCOTT to round Forkings and wrap up the scoring.
