Pompey 9 Crawley 1

Yengi nets hat-trick in convincing pre-season win

22 July 2023

Kusini Yengi hit a hat-trick as Pompey eased to a 9-1 victory over League Two side Crawley in a behind closed doors friendly.

The match took place in steady rain at the club’s Copnor Road training base and was split into four 30-minute periods.

Yengi was one of four players making their first appearance for the Blues, alongside Regan Poole, Gavin Whyte and Abu Kamara.

Anthony Scully added a brace, while there were also goals for Zak Swanson, Colby Bishop – from the penalty spot – Tom Lowery and Saydee.

It was the visitors who had the first chance, but after an early free-kick was curled over, Pompey took control.

Terry Devlin was unable to convert Connor Ogilvie’s delivery at the back post, while Joe Morrell’s header was comfortably dealt with after Swanson had done well to keep the ball in play.

And the deadlock was broken on 18 minutes, as Kamara’s drilled delivery was cleared as far as SWANSON, whose volleyed strike deflected into the net.

The hosts continued to dominate and although their opponents did then have a spell of pressure of their own, they were unable to test Will Norris.

End of first quarter: Pompey 1 Crawley 0

The Blues came roaring out of the traps following a quick break and Bishop’s fierce angled drive was parried clear by Corey Addai.

And the striker was then found by Morrell inside the box, drawing a save from the keeper’s legs before Swanson saw his follow-up attempt blocked.

But Crawley were level on 49 minutes, as Harry Forster was on hand to react when Ogilvie had blocked an initial shot.

Pompey were soon back on the attack, though, and Whyte’s cross was turned just wide by Devlin, who then bent a shot past the post following good work from Morrell and Bishop.

And they restored their advantage with the very last kick of the first half, as BISHOP confidently rolled home a penalty after Ogilvie had been taken out in the area.

Half Time: Pompey 2 Crawley 1

John Mousinho made eight changes at the halfway stage, with Sean Raggett having already replaced Poole towards the end of the opening hour.

Jack Sparkes was one of those introduced and his dangerous low cross found Paddy Lane, whose effort was blocked.

And Sparkes was involved again as Pompey strengthened their lead on 69 minutes, threading a pass through for SCULLY to bend home a fine finish.

Yengi was then introduced for Kamara and the home side kept up the pressure, with Saydee and Lowery seeing shots blocked in quick succession.

The latter player had an excellent opportunity after stealing possession in the Crawley half, but could only fire wide.

Pompey continued to look dangerous and when one attack was only cleared as far as Ben Stevenson, the midfielder’s long-range attempt clipped the top of the bar.

But LOWERY did grab their fourth goal on 88 minutes, lashing the ball into the net after Scully had cut it back for him.

End of third quarter: Pompey 4 Crawley 1

With Crawley making a host of changes themselves, Pompey ran riot by adding five more in the final half-hour.

Australian forward YENGI got the first of them, controlling Scully’s ball in from the left and neatly finishing.

Josh Oluwayemi had been brought on and, like Norris before him, was given little trouble, but still made one smart save and cut out a dangerous cross.

Most of the action was taking place at the other end and YENGI arrived at the near post to convert another left-sided Scully centre.

He almost completed his treble after meeting a Harry Jewitt-White delivery from the other flank, only to see the ball cleared from the line.

And Jewitt-White did have an assist on 110 minutes, picking out SCULLY to drill home his second of the afternoon.

The winger then turned provider yet again, this time finding SAYDEE, who neatly lifted the ball over the keeper and into the net.

But it was YENGI who wrapped things up with a late ninth goal, taking a touch from Lane’s pass and finishing well to ensure a hat-trick on his maiden appearance.
