Pompey 1 Europa FC 0

Bishop on target in pre-season win

6 July 2023

Pompey made a winning start to their pre-season schedule, with Colby Bishop’s penalty enough to see off Gibraltarian outfit Europa FC.

The pace of the game – played at the Estadio Jose Burgos De Quintana in Malaga – was dictated by the 30C temperatures that necessitated a break for drinks in each half.

John Mousinho used 21 players, handing first appearances in a Blues shirt to summer signings Will Norris, Conor Shaughnessy, Jack Sparkes, Ben Stevenson, Anthony Scully, Terry Devlin and Christian Saydee.

But Gavin Whyte and Kusini Yengi did not feature, as they are further behind in their training schedule, nor did international pair Joe Morrell and Paddy Lane.

After a fairly sedate opening, Pompey were handed an excellent opportunity to break the deadlock when Harry Jewitt-White was brought down in the box.

BISHOP stepped up to take the penalty, confidently sending the keeper the wrong way and burying the ball in the bottom corner, much to the delight of the hundreds of travelling fans.

Europa had their best chance of the game midway through the first half, courtesy of a free-kick that grazed the outside of the post.

And the Blues went close with a set-piece of their own, as Scully’s attempt was claimed by the keeper.

Pompey did have to make a couple of changes, with Joe Rafferty and Scully both seeming to pick up knocks.

But they went close to doubling their lead just before the break, as Liam Vincent skipped past a couple of challenges and drew a save.

Half Time: Pompey 1 Europa 0

With eight changes made at the interval, the English side had to find their fluidity again when the game restarted.

But it was Europa who were first to threaten and Josh Oluwayemi was called into action to make a relatively comfortable stop.

Pompey soon started to settle and Saydee burst into the box before seeing his fierce angled drive smartly saved.

Vincent then took a free-kick from the edge of the box that he had won himself, only to see the ball turned behind.

The resulting corner led to a scramble in the box, but Europa survived to ensure their deficit was not increased.

They never really looked like levelling the contest, with a series of free-kicks and corners failing to trouble Oluwayemi.

And the final stages drifted by without much incident, as Pompey ended their Spanish training camp on a high.
