Blues Beaten In Cup Semi-Final

Defeat for Pompey Women at Nottingham Forest

5 March 2023

Pompey Women missed out on a place in the National League Cup final after suffering a 5-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest.

Becky Anderson’s brace, along with goals from Olivia Cook, Charlotte Greengrass and Mai Moncaster, ensured the home side progressed.

Jay Sadler made two changes from the side beaten by Watford in the league, with Jazz Younger and Annie Rolf replacing Evie Gane and Ali Hall.

It was the Blues who made the brighter start at Halbrooke Stadium and Anaisa Harney turned the ball narrowly over following good work from Sophie Quirk.

Quirk then drove dangerously down the left and whipped in a cross that was well claimed by Emily Batty.

At the other end, Danielle Rowe dealt with a Greengrass cross before Nicole Barrett tackled the same player.

Pompey were still probing, though, and Ava Rowbotham cleared the crossbar after Rowe’s free-kick had only been partially cleared.

Izzy Collins then stole possession, played a neat one-two with Quirk and whipped the ball into the box, where Rolf’s flicked effort was saved by Batty.

But it was Forest who broke the deadlock on 39 minutes, as Cook tapped home following an almighty scramble in the box.

Half Time: Nottingham Forest 1 Pompey 0

Pompey had more than matched their opponents before the break, but Forest were clinical after the restart.

They soon doubled their advantage, with Anderson slotting past Hannah Haughton following some great work from Sophie Domingo.

Harney fired wide as the Blues searched for a way back into the contest, while Batty then kept out Quirk’s bending strike.

But Forest effectively wrapped things up on the hour mark, when Greengrass exploited space behind the back-line before calmly finding the net.

And a fourth goal soon followed from the home side, with Anderson completing a flowing team move to score for the second time.

It had turned into a damage limitation exercise for the visitors and Haughton did well to save Moncaster’s fine strike.

But it was Moncaster who added a fifth in stoppage-time, as the substitute stole possession before placing the ball into the net.

Pompey: Haughton; Barrett, Younger, Rowe (c), Collins (Humphrey 77); Lane, Rowbotham (Macdonald 58), Rolf; Bell (Scott 58), Harney, Quirk
Subs not used: Gane, Wild
