Jacobs: Keep It Going

Midfielder looking to maintain winning run at Cambridge

With six points gained, seven goals scored and just one conceded, it has certainly been a positive few days for Pompey.

And Michael Jacobs wants to ensure they do not rest on their laurels during a hectic run of League One fixtures.

After seeing off high-flying Bolton earlier in the week, it would be easy to think struggling Cambridge are there for the taking at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday.

But Jacobs knows the hosts will be fighting to keep their third tier status and wants to make sure the Blues do not let their recent standards drop.

He said: “We need to win games quickly and put a run together, but we’ve had two really pleasing performances.

“The start to the season was so promising and then we went so long without getting a victory in the league, which was a travesty.

“Recent matches have shown what we’re capable of, though, and we need to keep that going if we are to climb the table.

“Every game is different in this division and Cambridge are struggling a bit after doing so well last season.

“We’ll need the mentality of being ready for a really tough test and have to stamp our authority on the contest.”

Jacobs has been a key performer for Pompey under John Mousinho and was recently moved to a more central role behind the striker.

He said: “It’s been a bit hit-and-miss this season, with the injuries I’ve had stopping me from having a proper run in the team and perhaps some inconsistent form.

“But I’ve managed to start a few more games since the new gaffer has come in and we’ve been able to pick up some decent results.

“The position has changed a bit and I’ve enjoyed that free role, while I’ve got a decent relationship with the midfield boys and being behind Colby, you know what you’re going to get from him.

“Now I need to keep doing that for the remainder of the season because we want to keep winning games.”

Jacobs celebrated the birth of his son by scoring in the thumping 4-0 victory over Cheltenham at Fratton Park.

He said: “I’m a bit sleep deprived! But it’s great having him here and we’re just getting used to having two now.

“Everyone’s happy and healthy. It’s been a great week and the goal last Saturday just capped things off.”
