Match Preview: Pompey v Forest Green

All you need to know about League One contest

31 March 2023

Pompey will look to keep their play-off hopes alive when they welcome Forest Green to Fratton Park on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

Their opponents are desperate for points for an altogether different reason, as they are currently rooted to the foot of the League One table.

A 17-match winless run finally came to an end last weekend, courtesy of a shock success over high-flying Sheffield Wednesday.

Jordon Garrick struck the only goal in the first half of a televised contest at The New Lawn, with keeper Ross Doohan denying Lee Greogry and Marvin Johnson.

But despite recording a first victory since Duncan Ferguson was appointed head coach in January, survival looks an unlikely prospect.

Rovers remain 11 points adrift of safety – although their goal difference means it is effectively 12 – with eight games remaining.

The Gloucestershire outfit are competing at this level of English football after securing the fourth tier title last term.

And their 2017 rise from the National League saw Nailsworth – with a population of under 6,000 – become the smallest settlement ever to have host an EFL club.

Pompey came out on top in the first competitive meeting between the sides back in October, courtesy of a Sean Raggett header.

Ronan Curtis (knee), Jayden Reid (knee) and Zak Swanson (groin) are all injured, while Joe Pigott serves the final game of a three-match ban.

Marlon Pack could feature after returning to training following a knee problem, while Joe Morrell and Dane Scarlett are back from international duty.

Corey O’Keeffe is still banned for the visitors after recently collecting his 10th booking of the season, while Dylan McGeouch (calf) is a doubt.

Baily Cargill, Jahmari Clarke, Charlie McCann, Tyler Onyango and Ben Stevenson are also in the Forest Green treatment room.
