Mousinho: A Lot To Unpack

Boss reflects on draw with Port Vale

25 March 2023

John Mousinho was pleased by the character shown by his side to fight back and claim a point against Port Vale.

But he was far less happy with the first half display that saw Pompey trailing by two goals at a packed Fratton Park.

Sloppy defending led to Matty Taylor and Funso Ojo netting for the visitors before Colby Bishop saw a penalty saved.

But it was much better after the break, with Bishop converting a second spot-kick before Michael Jacobs levelled.

A deflected stoppage-time strike from Reeco Hackett was kept out to deny the hosts victory and Mousinho was left reflection on a game of two halves.

The Blues boss said: “We would have taken the point at the break, but certainly not beforehand as we wanted to come out and win it.

“There’s a huge amount to unpack and it was just a hugely disappointing opening 45 minutes from every perspective.

“Pretty much everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong – and a lot of that was of our own doing.

“We weren’t aggressive enough and allowed Ellis Harrison and Taylor too much space, which led to the first goal.

“When you make errors and let a good side get into the contest, it can be very difficult to turn things around.

“Missing the penalty just before half-time meant we didn’t really have any momentum after the restart.

“So credit to the lads for coming out and fighting back to level the game – we knew that just one goal could shift the mentality.

“But we couldn’t quite capitalise on that and then seemed to drop 10 yards, not having that ruthless mentality to win it.

“If Reeco’s shot at the end had gone in then I think we would have deserved that on our second half performance, but probably not on the first.”

Jacobs came on after Paddy Lane had limped off, while Clark Roberts replaced Ryley Towler at the interval.

Mousinho said: “He’s been absolutely fantastic for us, but we wanted to get more experience on the pitch.

“Clark just gives us that cool head under pressure and it’s something that Ryley is definitely going to develop.

“It looks like a pulled hamstring for Paddy and we’ll see what that looks like, but they can often be 4-6 weeks.

“That’s unfortunate for him because he’s done so well in the past few games. He’ll probably have a scan and then we’ll go from there.”
