Mousinho Gives 'Satisfied' Verdict

Boss looking for more positive signs at Accrington

14 March 2023

John Mousinho is satisfied with how Pompey have fared in his first dozen fixtures as head coach.

Successive defeats to high-flying Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday have slightly dented an impressive start.

But with six victories under his belt, there has certainly been an upturn in form over the past couple of months.

And ahead of this evening’s trip to Accrington, Mousinho wants to see continued improvements from his side.

The Blues boss said: “We were quite happy with the points total after 10 games, although less happy after 12 games!

“But if we take a step back and look at things with some perspective, then we can be relatively satisfied.

“You always want to improve and there are more points we feel we could have taken, such as on Saturday.

“Overall, we’re happy with the response from the players, the fans – who can see what we’re trying to do here – and the club as a whole.

“Now we have to keep going with the positivity and the longer we get with this group, the better off we’ll be.”

Pompey face a Stanley outfit currently sitting just above the League One drop zone and the fixture sees Colby Bishop return to his former club.

Mousinho said: “They’re a side who have overachieved for a number of years and John Coleman has done an excellent job.

“It’s a side that has everything you would expect from Accrington – and probably a bit more. They’re well organised, strong and can play.

“Going back to your former club is always an interesting occasion and we’ll try to harness a bit of that from Colby.

“I’m sure he’ll take it in his stride and try to use it as added motivation to go and get that 20th goal of the season.”

Mousinho also provided an update on Ronan Curtis following the news that the forward had suffered an ACL injury.

He said: “Ronan is all set for surgery after his appointment with the specialist and he’s come to terms with the long lay-off.

“He came in on Friday and we had a good chat. He’s as happy as you can be in this situation and ready to hit the ground running when he comes back.”
