Mousinho: Levels Must Be Maintained

Boss looks ahead to Cambridge test

3 March 2023

Fine performances in recent victories over Cheltenham and Bolton have shown what Pompey are capable of.

And John Mousinho now wants to make sure their standards remain high during a hectic run of fixtures.

There are four away contests in the next five matches – starting with Saturday’s trip to Cambridge – and they all take place in the space of just 15 days.

Mousinho has been happy with the recent form from his side, but is certainly not getting carried away by it.

The Blues boss said: “We’ve got to take confidence from what we did the other night and set that down as a marker.

“But we also can’t suddenly think we’ve cracked it because we’ve beaten one of the division’s better sides.

“There’s another challenge coming up on Saturday that will offer something completely different and then it continues on Tuesday and so on.

“It’s a really fine balance between taking belief from how we’ve performed to realising that we’ll have to match those effort levels again.

“There’s a reason why lower league sides can match and sometimes beat top level teams in the FA Cup – as we saw this week.

"We’ve got to get there and try to stay there – that’s the challenge that the lads have set for themselves."

“It is because the levels aren’t actually that different, but you see more consistency from the best players.

“That’s why you see that anyone can beat anyone in this league, but the better clubs do it every single week.

“We’ve got to get there and try to stay there – that’s the challenge that the lads have set for themselves.”

Pompey’s opponents have won just once since the turn of the year and are only being kept off the foot of the table by Forest Green.

Mousinho said: “Cambridge had a good start to the season and we were very lucky to beat them back in August when I was at Oxford.

“Mark Bonner has them well organised and they’ve certainly got talented players, so their position does surprise me.

“We have to make sure we don’t get lured into a false sense of security and will be expecting a difficult test.”

There are no new major injury concerns for Pompey, although Ronan Curtis limped off against Bolton.

Mousinho said: “He took a knock to the back of the knee and we’ve monitored that, so we’re confident that he’ll be fine for the weekend.

“There are no other changes, with Tom Lowery obviously back in the fold and we hope to have Jay Mingi available from next week.”
