Mousinho: We're Up For The Challenge

Boss looks ahead to Barnsley test

6 March 2023

Pompey’s run of good form will ben tested by arguably two of the toughest matches of the season this week.

It begins with a midweek trip to an in-form Barnsley side on Tuesday evening before concluding with Saturday’s Fratton clash with table-topping Sheffield Wednesday.

But John Mousinho is focusing on the game rather than the occasion, with his attention currently limited to the first of those fixtures.

And he knows what to expect from the Tykes, with the sides drawing 1-1 on the south coast just a month ago.

The Blues boss said: “This does feel like a particularly big week, although they all feel that way at the moment.

“All we can do is focus on Tuesday night and then when that one’s done, we’ll dust ourselves down and be ready for Saturday.

“We’ve had the experience of playing Barnsley recently and I don’t think there will be a huge amount of change from what we saw at Fratton Park.

“It was a real kick in the stomach because I felt we deserved a win and then we conceded late on from a throw.

“They’re a very organised side with some really good players and, like us, are currently on an excellent run of form.

"Some recent games have been fairly comfortable and others have seen us deal with a bit of adversity."

“So we’re looking forward to the challenge of going away from home and facing a side who are in the top six.

“There’s pride from me in the way our players have taken on what we’ve asked of them since I've come in.

“Some recent games have been fairly comfortable and others have seen us deal with a bit of adversity.”

Pompey will be without Ronan Curtis for the remainder of the season after the forward suffered an ACL injury.

Mousinho said: “Speaking from experience, you go in and have the surgery, then are off the crutches in a short space of time.

“But the hard bit is when you then dig down into all the rehab because it’s a long, long road to recovery.

“Ronan is a determined character, though, and I’m sure he’ll come back from this. He will have the support of everyone at Pompey.”

One player who could provide a welcome presence back on the pitch in the near future is midfielder Jay Mingi.

Mousinho said: “He travelled with us to Cambridge, but was never going to be available for selection. We just wanted to get him back in among the squad.

“It’s the next step in his recovery and we don’t want to rush him. We’re just taking our time with him and will see for Saturday.”
