History Society Seeking Women’s Football Knowledge

Researching female football in Portsmouth

26 May 2023

As part of the club's 125th anniversary celebrations, the Pompey History Society are looking to gain a better understanding of women’s football in around Portsmouth between the 1960s and 1990s.

During World War One, the city had a successful women’s team which came to an end in November 1918.

It is thought that participation continued locally – however, it wasn’t reported on very well, if at all, meaning there are no existing records.

The current women’s team officially started in 1987, playing in the Southern Region League, but it is known that there were many local female teams under the Blues’ name.

For example, the 'Hostesses' played several games in the late 1960s and the History Society are eager to recognise if this this helped build a connection with the official club.

Mick Comben, from the Pompey History Society, said: “We have already spoken to one or two of those involved, but we would love to capture the memories of any of those who played or officiated or even watched and ensure that those stories are available for others to enjoy in the future.”

This project is being led by students from the University of Portsmouth, so if you were, or if you know of, a player or official from those days, or perhaps you watched games and would be prepared to share your knowledge, email history@pompeyfc.co.uk
