Match Preview: Pompey v Wycombe

All you need to know about League One contest

6 May 2023

It is not what either set of fans wanted to be competing for, but Sunday’s Fratton Park contest sees a battle to secure eighth spot in League One.

Pompey welcome Wycombe to the south coast (12pm kick-off) knowing that a draw would be enough to remain above their opponents in the final League One standings.

The contest also provides the hosts with an opportunity to extend their unbeaten run to 11 matches ahead of the summer break.

Both sides have young managers at the helm, with John Mousinho and Matt Bloomfield former team-mates at the Chairboys.

The latter racked up more than 550 appearances for the club before hanging up his boots last summer.

He returned to take up the managerial post back in February following the departure of long-serving boss Gareth Ainsworth to QPR.

It has been a strangely quiet conclusion to the campaign for Wanderers, who in the past three years have reached the play-offs twice, with a final day drop from the Championship sandwiched between.

They triumphed 2-0 – courtesy of goals from Anis Mehmeti and Garath McCleary – when the teams met at Adams Park before Christmas.

But Wycombe are still searching for their first league win at Fratton Park, with both of their previous successes coming in cup competitions.

TEAM NEWS
Ronan Curtis (knee) and Jayden Reid (knee) are both missing, while Zak Swanson is unlikely to feature after returning to training following a groin injury.

But Denver Hume and Tom Lowery have both recovered from knocks and are available for Sunday’s game.

Jack Grimmer is likely to miss out for Wycombe after suffering a concussion and the visitors could give some fringe players a chance to impress.
