Mousinho: That Bodes Well

Boss reflects on draw with Wycombe

7 May 2023

With little to play for apart from who finished in eighth spot, you could be forgiven for expecting Pompey’s match against Wycombe to have been a dull affair.

That was not the case in the final fixture of the season, however, as the sides played out an exciting 2-2 draw at Fratton Park.

The hosts twice had to battle from behind with Marlon Pack and Paddy Lane cancelling out efforts from Garath McCleary and Lewis Wing.

And they had plenty of opportunities to claim all three points, with an attacking display that pleased John Mousinho.

The Blues boss said: “I thought the performance was excellent and we were unlucky not to score quite a few more.

“We conceded a sloppy opener and then their second was an absolute wonder goal, but we remained positive to come back on each occasion.

“We created chance after chance after chance and unfortunately couldn’t put them in the back of the net.

“It wasn’t for a lack of effort, nor do I think there was a lack of quality in the final third because we looked really good.

“If that level of display from us is anything to go by, then I think the future is going to be extremely promising.

"I thought the performance was excellent and we were unlucky not to score quite a few more."

“We want more crosses and we want more shots – our first goal comes after Paddy takes a shot from the edge of the box, there’s a really good save and then we score from the corner.

“We’ve been trying to implement elements of that in the three months I’ve been here, although it does take time.”

Lane’s goal capped an impressive individual showing, with the Northern Ireland international converting Joe Pigott’s cross to open his Blues account.

Mousinho said: “We knew it would be difficult coming in with a lot of expectation and on the back of a tough six months for him.

“We had to get him over that and then an injury, but he’s been excellent in these past couple of games.

“You can see the threat he has in behind and the quality when he comes onto his left foot – we need to see more of that.”

Mousinho took his children onto the pitch for the post-match lap of appreciation, which gave the squad a chance to thank the Fratton faithful.

He said: “It’s nice to have them here and they’re always shouting ‘Play up Pompey’ at me when we’re back at home.

“It was great seeing everyone afterwards and it comes off the back of a season when everyone’s a bit disappointed because we’ve finished eighth.

“My message to all the boys would be imagine what it will be like if and when we’re really competing.”
