Raggett: I’m Not A Good Watcher

Defender reflects on Pompey’s season ahead of Wycombe test

5 May 2023

Sean Raggett had only failed to start one league game for Pompey this term prior to the past couple of matches.

But the reigning ‘Player of the Season’ had to contend with cameo appearances from the bench against Accrington and Derby.

Head coach John Mousinho explained that was to give younger centre-backs Di’Shon Benard and Ryley Towler a chance to shine.

Raggett accepted that choice, although ahead of Sunday’s campaign closing contest with Wycombe, admitted that he is not the best spectator.

The 30-year-old said: “I understand because the gaffer said he wanted to have a good look at Di’Shon, whose been a bit unfortunate not to play more.

“There hasn’t been too much to play for in those games, although I still find it boring to not be involved!

“I’ve played a lot of consecutive games and I’m not a big fan of sitting on the bench. I’m not a very good watcher.

"We’ll still look back and see it as a disappointing season – the aim at the start is always to get promoted."

“I was still able to come on for both fixtures for a little bit, but I’d much rather be out there from the start.

“Wycombe are another side like us with not much to play for, but I think you saw in our performance last week that we’ll still put our all in.

“We’ll still look back and see it as a disappointing season – the aim at the start is always to get promoted.

“It’s frustrating and the players want to go up just as much as the fans do. It’s a collective and we’re all part of the same club.”

Raggett was present at Tuesday night’s awards dinner, which saw the squad vote for Colby Bishop as their ‘Player of the Season’.

He said: “I voted for him. He’s scored a lot of goals for us this season and I think most of the players agree. He probably ran away with it.

“Colby’s strong and he’s clever, but he’s also got more quality than some people perhaps give him credit for.

“When the previous gaffer was speaking to me about him, I was a massive advocate for him coming here.”
