Blues progress in FA Cup

26 November 2023

Pompey Women comfortably progressed to the third round of the FA Cup with a 7-0 victory at Ebbsfleet.

Beth Lumsden, Georgie Freeland and Sophie Quirk all struck twice, with Emma Jones also finding the target.

Jay Sadler made five changes from the side that exited the Hampshire Cup at Bournemouth the previous week.

Riva Casley, Ella Wild and Ali Hall joined Lumsden and Jones in returning to the starting line-up, with Evie Gane, Izzy Collins, Dani Lane, Ella Humphrey and Emily Pitman making way.

The visitors looked to assert themselves right from the start and Lumsden drew a save from Courtney Roberts after Hall had driven the ball across the face of goal.

And when Lumsden was then brought down on the edge of the box, Jones fired the free-kick against the post.

It looked to be just a matter of time before the deadlock was broken and Roberts was again called into action to deny Hall.

The opener did arrive on 18 minutes, as Quirk beat a couple of players down the left and cut the ball back for LUMSDEN to smash home at the far post.

And the lead was doubled in similar fashion moments later, with FREELAND this time taking advantage of Quirk’s assist.

It was then Lumsden who turned provider, working her way down the right and picking out JONES to finish.

The Blues were rampant and another goal arrived when QUIRK collected a ball over the top, rounded Roberts and slotted into an empty net.

QUIRK struck again just before the interval, cutting inside and bending a shot into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Half Time: Ebbsfleet 0 Pompey 5

Pompey could afford to take their foot off the accelerator slightly when the action restarted, with the victory all but assured.

But they added a sixth goal just past the hour mark – and it came from a lovely passing move that saw almost every player get a touch.

The ball finally arrived at the feet of Jones and she squared it for FREELAND to notch her second of the afternoon.

Sadler turned to the bench to freshen things up, with Lane, Pitman and Kelci Bowers all given an opportunity to progress.

Hannah Haughton had been a virtual spectator throughout the game, but the skipper was required to turn Amelia Woodgate’s effort around the post on 68 minutes.

Most of the action was still taking place at the opposite end of the pitch, though, and the visitors broke quickly up the pitch from an Ebbsfleet corner to score again.

Ava Rowbotham found Jones and she surged purposefully down the left before picking out LUMSDEN to net at the back stick.

They might have scored an eighth late on as the ball pinged around the box from a Lumsden free-kick, but Jones, Lane and Casley all saw their shots blocked.

Pompey: Haughton; Barrett (Bowers 67), Younger, Casley, Wild; Hall, Rowbotham, Freeland (Lane 67); Lumsden, Jones, Quirk (Pitman 67)
