Mousinho: Let's Get Serious

Boss says Blues have to be ready for Chesterfield test

3 November 2023

Neutrals will be tuning in to Sunday lunchtime’s FA Cup broadcast to see if Chesterfield can cause an upset.

But it requires just a cursory glance at the Spireites squad to see that they are a non-league side in name only.

Former Pompey midfielders Tom Naylor and Michael Jacobs are among those who could easily be competing higher than the fifth tier.

So John Mousinho will certainly not be taking the first round opponents lightly when he takes his men to the SMH Group Stadium.

The Blues boss said: “We’ll take the tie as seriously as we possibly can, so expect a strong side to be put out. We want to be competitive.

“Chesterfield are top of the National League and they’ve got a squad littered with ex-League One and Championship players.

“They’ve got a manager with experience of that level as well, so they’re probably below where they should be.

“Paul Cook has done well wherever he’s gone and likes to play an attacking style where his side dominates possession.

"I’ve got really fond memories of the FA Cup and it’s brilliant to be involved in it. It’s a really special competition."

“Their recent form has been great and they have put sides away comfortably, so we expect a tough test.

“I’ve got really fond memories of the FA Cup and it’s brilliant to be involved in it. It’s a really special competition.”

The south coast has recently been battered by Storm Ciarán, but that has not affected Pompey’s plans.

Mousinho said: “It’s some of the worst weather I’ve seen during my long time in football and the ground staff have done a brilliant job to make sure the training pitches are prepared every day.

“We’ve had access to everything that we’ve needed and that’s useful because there aren’t too many free weeks for us to work in.”

Pompey have discovered the extent of Connor Ogilvie’s ankle injury after receiving the results from a scan.

Mousinho said: “We’re looking at around six to eight weeks and it’s not an ideal scenario, although when it first happened, we feared it could be worse.

“He’s still in the boot and we all know about his dedication and professionalism, so he’ll come back as quickly as possible.

“Tom Lowery and Marlon Pack are still pushing on the grass with modified sessions and all those currently out are progressing nicely.”
