Mousinho: Sentiment Out The Window

Boss prepares for Burton return

28 November 2023

John Mousinho’s three seasons as a player at Burton were certainly filled with success.

He skippered them to back-to-back promotions from League Two into the Championship, then helped the Brewers stay in the second tier.

But he will be in the away dug-out this evening, with Pompey making the trip up to the Pirelli Stadium.

Conor Shaughnessy and Christian Saydee are also facing their former side, but Mousinho insists they will not lose focus.

The Blues boss said: “I haven’t really thought about it too much, but I enjoyed a successful spell there as a player and it’s always great to go back.

“The truth is that the focus for us is on trying to win this game and all sentiment goes out of the window.

“It’s a former club, but that’s not particularly relevant for anyone other than me, Conor and Christian.

“We won’t get carried away with the occasion and will instead just get on with it and do our best to produce a positive display.

“Dino Maamria has put together a good Burton side, although they’ve suffered slightly with their form over the past couple of weeks.

“But they took the same number of points that we did in October and have regularly batted above their average.

“There are threats all over the pitch – there’s no point singling one or two out – and we’ll have to be wary of that.”

Joe Morrell starts a two-match ban for the Blues after being sent off for the second time this season in Saturday’s defeat to Blackpool.

Mousinho said: “We spoke after the game and he acknowledged it’s something we can’t have, although they weren’t the worst challenges.

“Once you’ve been booked for the first one, though, you don’t need to go to ground because the referees, in this day and age, will send you off.

“We’ve got no new injury concerns. Zak Swanson was missing on Saturday as we await scan results from an ankle problem, but we hope it’s nothing major.

“Gavin Whyte didn’t play against Blackpool for personal reasons and we expect him not to be involved at Burton either.”
