Blues climb to top of the table

5 November 2023

Pompey climbed to the top of the National League standings after beating MK Dons 3-0 at Westleigh Park.

Beth Lumsden netted at the start of each half, while Jazz Younger also found the target on a comfortable afternoon.

Jay Sadler made four changes from the side that beat the same opposition in the cup the previous week.

Jazz Younger, Izzy Collins, Dani Lane and Sophie Quirk all returned to the starting line-up, with Evie Gane, Ella Wild, Georgie Freeland and Emily Pitman dropping to the bench.

There were just 30 seconds on the clock when the Blues broke the deadlock to settle any pre-match nerves.

LUMSDEN received the ball 25 yards out and hit a fierce effort that Chloe Sansom was unable to stop finding the net.

The visitors looked to hit back, although Hannah Haughton was not overly troubled by shots from Lucy Wood and Emily Wilson.

Pompey were proving to be more clinical, though, and doubled their advantage when YOUNGER rose to head home an Emma Jones corner.

They almost went further ahead moments later, with Jones collecting a Nicole Barrett throw and drawing a save from Sansom.

MK Dons then received an added blow when Wilson was punished by the referee for dissent and sent to the sin bin.

They were still putting up a fight, though, and Gemma Biggadike’s corner was diverted over the bar by Zoe Creaney.

Half Time: Pompey 2 MK Dons 0

Pompey had netted straight from kick-off before the break and they repeated the trick at the start of the second half.

LUMSDEN was the scorer once more, smashing the ball into the roof of the net after being found at the back post by Quirk.

They tried to keep building momentum and Dani Lane narrowly cleared the crossbar following good work from Quirk and Ava Rowbotham.

Sansom was then called into action once more, with Lumsden flicking the ball up and hitting a volley that the keeper saved.

The hosts still had to be alert at the other end, however, and Haughton kept out Laura Mitchell’s effort at her near post.

Sadler turned to the bench to freshen things up, as the Blues sensed that the three points were in the bag.

And the margin of victory might even have been greater, with substitute Freeland collecting Jones’ pass and rolling a shot narrowly past the post.

Pompey: Haughton (c); Barrett (Wild 72), Younger (Gane 68), Casley, Collins; Hall, Rowbotham, Lane (Freeland 72); Lumsden, Jones (Pitman 80), Quirk
