Shaughnessy: Small Details, Big Difference

Defender reflects on defeat to Blackpool

25 November 2023

It was a comprehensive defeat that brought Pompey’s 27-match unbeaten league run to an abrupt end.

They were beaten 4-0 by Blackpool at Fratton Park, although the match was not without moments of controversy.

Abu Kamara was denied what looked to be a clear penalty, shortly after the visitors scored a second goal scored by a player in an offside position.

Conor Shaughnessy admitted those moments hurt the Blues and wants them to make a quick recovery.

The defender said: “It was a tough afternoon for us against a good side, although I thought it was quite evenly matched at 11v11.

“There were small details that made a big difference, but it obviously opened up more after the red card and Blackpool used the extra man well.

“It looked like we should have had a penalty for a foul on Abu and it was a big call from the referee not to give it.

"Hopefully those decisions will balance themselves out over the course of the season and unfortunately they didn’t go our way on this occasion."

“The second goal for Blackpool also looked to have come off their man who was stood in an offside position.

“Hopefully those decisions will balance themselves out over the course of the season and unfortunately they didn’t go our way on this occasion.

“Obviously the immediate feeling is one of disappointment and it will probably take 24 hours to get over that.

“But we know we’ve got a game on Tuesday night where we can set things straight and are really looking forward to that.”

Even after Pompey had fallen four goals behind, there was a non-stop wall of noise generated by the Fratton faithful.

Shaughnessy said: “The fans were absolutely brilliant and we went behind early, but straight away they were building us up again.

“They were amazing right to the very end and it’s something we’re incredibly grateful for. Hopefully we can put it right for them at Burton.”
