Pompey to make Armistice Day ahead of Charlton match

9 November 2023

Ahead of Saturday’s match, Pompey will remember all of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The League One fixture against Charlton falls on Armistice Day and the club have provided tickets to representatives from 16 Regiment Royal Artillery and RAF 617 Squadron.

Both captains and a serving member of the military will lay a poppy wreath on the pitch just prior to kick-off.

The Last Post will then be played and a minute’s silence will then be observed by all those inside Fratton Park.

Pompey’s players will be wearing poppies on their shirts and after the game, these will be auctioned off to raise funds for the Royal British Legion.

A military Band – comprised of members of HMS Collingwood Volunteer Band – will also be performing in the FanZone from around 2.10pm.

Pompey chief executive Andrew Cullen said: “It’s an honour for us to be able to pay our respects at Fratton Park on Remembrance Day.

“It’s important for us all to take a moment to reflect on those who have sacrificed their life in service of their country over the years.

“With that in mind, we are delighted to have so many serving and former members of the armed forces at Saturday’s fixture.”

Commander Andrew Plenty, chairman of the Portsmouth Armed Forces Supporters’ Club, said: “Remembrance Day is an opportunity for us all to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

“We remember not only the guns falling silent at the end of World War One, but those who have lost their lives in conflicts across the globe ever since, as well as those serving today.

“We are a proud military city that is intrinsically linked to the armed forces and our football club is equally connected from its very formation 125 years ago.

“It is fitting, therefore, that we have representation this year from serving members of 16 Regiment Royal Artillery, as well as serving personnel and veterans from all three services, including 617 Sqn RAF on the 80th Anniversary of the Dambusters Raid.

“We are extremely grateful for the continued support the club gives to our local armed forces community.”
