Blues make early exit from FA Youth Cup

Pompey Academy made an early exit from the FA Youth Cup after falling to a 2-1 defeat at a wet Eastleigh.

They had most of the possession and territorial advantage, but were unable to capitalise on that.

And their opponents made the most of their opportunities, with a goal in each half from Samuel Godfroy and Lewis Colvin.

Maxwell Hurst did reduce the Blues’ deficit right at the death, but it was not enough to halt the Spitfires’ progress.

As the rain fell heavily, it was mostly one-way traffic in the first half, with Pompey launching wave after wave of attack.

For all their control of possession, however, there was not enough being done to test Oliver Harrison between the sticks.

There was an early attempt from Dan Murray that took a huge deflection and looped narrowly over the bar.

A Harvey Laidlaw cross from the left was then helped on by Hurst with Sam Folarin’s close-range header landing on the roof of the net.

Pompey continued to dominate and despite plenty of balls being sent into the box, they would not quite land right for the strikers.

So it was completely against the run of play when the home side broke the deadlock with 20 minutes on the clock.

Bastian Smith dealt with the initial drilled effort from Billy Brackley, but Godfroy was on hand to bundle home the loose ball.

After a sloppy spell, the Blues looked to shake off that setback and soon set about reasserting their dominance.

A long kick up the pitch from Smith eventually ran through for Hurst, whose shot was cleared from the line by Godfroy.

Hurst then got on the end of a Laidlaw cross from deep on the left, with Harrison doing just enough to stop his header looping into the net.

Pompey were looking for a response after the break, but almost found themselves further behind within three minutes of the restart.

Brackley rolled a shot against the base of the post and it seemed like Joe Ryan would be left with a simple finish, only for Mitch Aston to slide in and make a brilliant block.

The visitors were soon on the attack themselves and Kevin Bosaka sent a firm header narrowly wide after meeting Laidlaw’s corner.

Connor May was brought off the bench to replace Jayden Keteku and soon saw a shot deflected over the bar.

But the hosts increased their lead on 70 minutes, with skipper Colvin emphatically converting a Godfroy free-kick.

And it summed up Pompey’s evening when a teasing Laidlaw delivery landed right between Hurst and Folarin, allowing Harrison to gather.

They did have a glimmer of hope when, deep into stoppage-time, HURST nodded home another good Laidlaw delivery.

But Eastleigh were able to see out the final couple of minutes to book their spot in the second round.
