Mousinho Pleased After Gruelling Month

Boss hoping for more good form in October

3 October 2023

All eyes glanced nervously towards September when the League One fixtures were released in the summer.

The schedulers had given Pompey a daunting month that included games against Peterborough, Derby, Barnsley, Lincoln and Wigan.

But the side were certainly not overawed, dropping just two points from that quintet of matches to climb to the summit.

And John Mousinho knows they cannot rest on their laurels, as October begins with this evening’s clash with Wycombe.

The Blues boss said: “It’s been a tough and gruelling month, but we’ve come out of it with some excellent results and that’s the most important thing.

“There are no easy games in League One, although there are ones that – on paper at least – you are expected to win.

“All the ones in September were really tough and even when we had a purple patch at Barnsley, we knew there was a good side ready to come back at us.

“So we’re very happy with everything we’ve been able to achieve and grateful that we’re in the position we find ourselves in.

“But the schedule is relentless and there’s no let-up, so we have to be ready to go again as we start a new month.

“We’ll park what’s happened before, move on from it and be ready a face a side who will be looking to come to Fratton Park and get a good result of their own.

“It’s about doing more of the same and approaching each game as it comes because there’s always a new challenge on the horizon.

“Matt Bloomfield has done terrifically well with Wycombe and they’re in good form. We expect a tough challenge from them.”

There has been some positive news on the injury front for Pompey, but they are waiting to see the extent of a late tackle on their skipper at the weekend.

Mousinho said: “Kusini Yengi trained fully with us on Monday, but whether he’ll be ready for this game, I don’t know. It might be too soon.

“We won’t make a decision on Marlon Pack until quite late after he took a knock to the ankle in the challenge that saw Wigan get a red card.

“Anthony Scully goes in for surgery today and we’ll have some clarity on him, while Tom Lowery has been out on the grass for a few days.”
