Mousinho: The Table Can Lie

Boss believes Cambridge will provide tough opposition

24 October 2023

Pompey head into a week containing back-to-back away games on a run of seven successive victories in all competitions.

It is a sequence they will be hoping to extend – at Cambridge this evening and then Reading on Saturday.

The first of those opponents are at the opposite end of the form table, with Mark Bonner’s men having not won since the start of September.

But John Mousinho has watched their recent games and believes that United find themselves in a false position.

The Blues boss said: “They’ve been unlucky to find themselves where they currently are in the League One table.

“They haven’t found a result in the past few weeks, which will frustrate them, but performances have been pretty good.

“Cambridge have been a bit unlucky in a few areas and I’m sure that – hopefully not in this game – Mark will turn things around.

“He’s an excellent young coach who has had that group for a number of years and we expect a difficult game.

“I’ve told all our lads that the league table is lying at the moment and they should be higher than they currently are.

“We have to be wary of that. It’s usually a tough fixture when you go to the Abbey and they have some really good players there.”

Pompey have made a habit of scoring late goals this season, with Conor Shaughnessy heading home a stoppage-time winner against Carlisle on Saturday.

Mousinho said: “It’s testament to how the lads go about their business and you have to make sure that you stay in games.

“You can’t get frustrated and we’ve shown patience – one of the pleasing things at the weekend was that we’d built possession before winning that corner that we scored from. “

Pompey have no new injury concerns ahead of their trip to the Abbey Stadium and should welcome back a winger.

Mousinho said: “Hopefully we’ll have Gavin Whyte available after illness, while it’s good to see Marlon Pack and Tom Lowery out on the grass again.

“Anthony Scully is progressing nicely, but still in the gym, so it’s looking promising with the long-term injuries.”
