A side needs more than good fortune to sit top of the table after the opening 13 games of the season.
But John Mousinho admitted that Pompey needed a dose of luck to see off a dogged Carlisle side at Fratton Park.
After failing to take a host of chances created in the first half, the League One leaders turned sloppy after the break.
So Mousinho was pleased to see Will Norris make a fine save to deny Dan Butterworth moments before Conor Shaughnessy headed home the stoppage-time winner from a Jack Sparkes corner.
The Blues boss said: “I’m obviously delighted that we’ve won the game and the manner of it is brilliant – scoring so late in front of the Fratton End.
“The overwhelming feeling is that we’ve nicked it and it’s probably the first time we’ve come in feeling like we perhaps haven’t deserved it. Carlisle can feel very hard done by.
“We were excellent in the first half and controlled the game, limiting our opponents to going longer, which they were effective at.

“It was just a case of not being able to find the back of the net, but then we were disappointing after the break.
“We lost control of the game for large parts and so felt a bit fortunate in the end to come away with all three points.
“We got a bit sloppy and gave the ball away far too many times, leaving ourselves a bit open – perhaps we got carried away because of the weight of expectation.
“You have to be wary against sides like Carlisle and Will bailed us out with a very good save down to the right.
“But set-pieces are a huge part of the game and you need to be aggressive. The work we’re doing with the boys is clearly paying off.
“We’re only just moving past the embryonic stage of the season, but it’s great to get another win, especially when we haven’t played particularly well.”
Gavin Whyte, Zak Swanson and Ryley Towler were all missing from the matchday squad to face the Cumbrians.
Mousinho explained: “Gavin was ill in the morning, while Zak and Ryley was both selection. They can consider themselves hard done by because neither deserve to be out of the squad.”
