Norris: A Collective Effort

Keepers discusses defensive record ahead of Reading test

26 October 2023

Will Norris is the last line of the Pompey defence – and has been doing a pretty good job at it so far this season.

The side are sitting top of the League One table and yet to taste defeat, while a record of just eight goals conceded is the best in the division.

Chuck in seven clean sheets from 14 appearances and it has been a decent start to life at Fratton Park for the summer signing.

But Norris is not getting carried away after a positive few months on the south coast and believes any praise should be shared around.

The keeper said: “I’m pretty proud of our record, but it’s a collective effort – we defend as a team and chuck our bodies on the line.

“There have been games where I’ve been pretty quiet and that’s down to the lads who are in front of me.

“I try not to think about clean sheets, but if you get enough, then the team will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.

"We’ve developed a nice understanding and we’re fairly settled because of the information we get during the week."

“We’re not in this game for individual accolades, although of course it’s nice to have a good defensive record.

“We’ve developed a nice understanding and we’re fairly settled because of the information we get during the week. We cover all bases to give us the platform.

“Joe Prodomo has been great to work with. He’s got really good ideas and is also receptive to our feedback, which is a big thing.”

Pompey will look to continue their good form this weekend, when they visit a Reading outfit who have been beset by financial issues.

Norris said: “We’re in a good spot at the moment. There’s competition for places and we want the unbeaten run to keep going.

“We’re so focused on what we are doing, so I don’t really look to much into what’s happening at other clubs.

“Reading are obviously having some problems and hopefully they’ll get resolved, but we’ve got a job to do and want to take all three points home on Saturday.”
