Raggett: A Professional Job

Defender happy to play a part in win over Port Vale

7 October 2023

Sean Raggett was delighted with the second half performance that earned Pompey yet another victory.

They had been poor before the break against Port Vale at Fratton Park and struggled to create any meaningful chances.

But Colby Bishop turned home Joe Rafferty’s centre to break the deadlock and added another goal from the penalty spot to secure a 2-0 win.

It might have been a bigger margin of success, but Raggett saw one header cleared from the line by Ben Garrity and a second superbly saved by Connor Ripley.

The defender said: “We weren’t at our best in the first half, but we came out after the break and showed a ruthless edge.

“We got the two goals and then saw the game out professionally – in the end that’s another really good win.

“Port Vale are a significantly better side than they were last season and they caused us a few problems.

“But we dealt with that and then when we did manage to create some chances, we made sure to put them away.

“Colby is always getting manhandled by opposition defenders, so it was nice to see him get a couple of goals.

“I also had one header that was cleared off the line and then another one that was a great save, so I’m disappointed not score myself.”

Raggett was making his first League One start of the campaign in place of the suspended Regan Poole.

He said: “I really enjoyed being out there. The boys have been flying at the start of the season, so it’s been hard to get games.

“But I’ve kept working hard in training and this chance has arisen, so I wanted to put in a good performance and get a win.

“I always want to play – every single person in that changing room wants the same thing. I’m just glad that I didn’t come in and we lost!”
