Shaughnessy: No Better Way To Open Pompey Account

Defender enjoyed his late winner against Wycombe

A stoppage-time winner? Check. On home soil? Check. At the Fratton End? Check.

Conor Shaughnessy certainly ticked all the boxes when scoring his first goal since a summer switch to Pompey.

The defender rose to head home a Jack Sparkes corner right at the death, as Pompey fought from behind to beat Wycombe 2-1.

It left the visitors appealing in vain for a foul on their keeper, but Shaughnessy knows there was nothing wrong with his late intervention.

He said: “It’s an unbelievable feeling and one that’s hard to describe – I don’t think there’s a better way to get my first goal for the club.

“There were more than 90 minutes played and it was at the Fratton End to win the game. It’s just brilliant.

“I haven’t seen it back, but I knew straight away I hadn’t fouled him – no chance. I got my head on the ball.

“You see a lot of them given and plenty of referees buy into the keeper going down, so fair play to him for making the correct decision.

“The guy who was marking me had probably won every header before that, so I just wanted to switch up my run a little bit.

“I thought I’d crash into it and hope for the best – thankfully it paid off. The reaction from the crowd was unreal.

“We don’t want to be going behind that often, but it shows the resilience and togetherness in this group.

“Everyone’s pulling together in the same direction and there’s a great feeling around the place at the moment.”

Shaughnessy thought he had opened his Blues account at Wigan on Saturday, only for his header to hit team-mate Regan Poole before crossing the line.

The Irishman said: “We had a laugh about it after the game and I just said that I’d have to get one on Tuesday instead, so it worked out exactly as we planned!”
