Pompey Academy were beaten for the first time this season after falling to a 2-1 defeat against Cheltenham in the Youth Alliance League.

The visitors struck twice in the first half at Copnor Road and although Spencer Spurway (pictured) reduced the deficit from a corner, the Blues could not find a leveller.

Lead professional development phase coach Sam Hudson said: “We were uncharacteristically poor with the ball in the attacking half for a lot of the game.

“Cheltenham set themselves up in quite a deep block and were very organised, so we found it difficult to break them down.

“We went behind after being caught out from a direct set-piece and then they scored again just before the break.

"We’ve fought back on quite a few occasions already this season, but on this occasion it just proved too difficult for us."

“They’d had three shots throughout the whole half and scored two of them, so it did feel like a hammer blow.

“We’ve fought back on quite a few occasions already this season, but on this occasion it just proved too difficult for us.

“Our combinations weren’t quite firing – there were moments when we took many touches and times when we were too hesitant to play forward and test their defence.

“We got one back with quite a messy goal, as Spencer’s looping header bounced down off the crossbar and went in.

“But we didn’t really create many clear-cut chances, unlike recent games where we’ve consistently been able to find the net.”

Pompey: Smith; Quarm, Spurway, Fox; Mullins (Staight 72), Aston, Clout (Bosaka 46), Murray, Trialist; May (Singerr 46), Folarin
