Blues run riot in Kent

17 September 2023

Pompey roared back to winning ways in style with an eight-goal haul at Chatham in the National League.

Georgie Freeland and Dani Lane both bagged braces, with Emma Jones, Beth Lumsden, Emily Pitman and an own-goal completing the rout.

Jay Sadler made four changes from the side that were narrowly beaten at Hashtag United the previous week.

Freeland was handed a full debut in attack, while there were also starts for Ella Wild, Ali Hall and Lane.

Leading scorer Sophie Quirk dropped to the bench, along with Nicole Barrett, Ava Rowbotham and Annie Rolf.

The visitors showed their intent right from the start, with Jones twice sending the ball narrowly off target in the opening minutes.

But the deadlock was broken on 16 minutes, as FREELAND collected a fine lifted pass from Riva Casley and slotted home.

Wild almost doubled the advantage midway through the first half, but fired just over when Lumsden’s cross was parried into her path.

The Blues did have a second moments later, however, as Freeland won the ball high up the pitch and squared it for JONES to find the net from the edge of the box.

Cara Davies ensured her side did not fall further behind by keeping out an audacious Leeta Rutherford volley.

But she was picking the ball out of her net once more on 42 minutes, when FREELAND arrived at the back post to convert a drilled Jones centre.

And there was still time for LANE to increase the lead before the break, courtesy of a close-range finish from Lumsden’s cut-back.

The visitors were in no mood to sit back when the action resumed and LUMSDEN impressively fired in their fifth of the afternoon following good work from Wild and Hall.

Quirk was brought on just past the hour mark, with the other four substitutes entering the fray soon after.

In between those changes, though, there was a neat move involving Rutherford and Lumsden that ended with LANE tucking the ball into the net.

Wild then combined well with Quirk before seeing her low effort gathered by Davies, as Pompey sought to increase Chatham’s misery.

Time may have been ticking away, but the Blues were still looking to push forward at every opportunity.

They were rewarded for their endeavour on 89 minutes, when a fierce effort from substitute PITMAN found the net.

Still the Pompey chances kept coming and an ambitious 30-yard strike from Quirk left the crossbar rattling.

And they were gifted an eighth goal right at the death, when Barrett swung in a corner and DAVIES inadvertently palmed it into her own net.

Pompey: Haughton (c); Gane (Barrett 74), Younger, Casley, Wild; Lane (Rolf 74), Rutherford (Rowbotham 74), Hall; Freeland, Jones (Quirk 61), Lumsden (Pitman 74)
