Poole Pleased With Pompey Grit

Goalscorer delighted with win at Wigan

30 September 2023

Regan Poole admitted that it was not Pompey’s most attractive victory of the season.

But the centre-back was delighted with the spirit they displayed to secure a 2-1 success over Wigan at the DW Stadium.

He cancelled out Martial Godo’s opener for the Latics before Paddy Lane volleyed home the winner before the break.

And Poole felt that the Blues always looked comfortable, even if their opponents showed some late fight after Charlie Wyke had been sent off for a foul on Marlon Pack.

He said: “We knew it was going to be a tough game and with the points deduction, Wigan’s league position doesn’t show what a good side they are.

“But even after we went behind, I knew we had the character to get back into it. I was still so calm about the situation.

“If you want to go places in this division, then these are the kind of fixtures that you really need to win.

“It was a gritty game at times and even when they went down to 10 men, Wigan still made it difficult for us.

“They went a bit longer for the final 10 minutes, but we dealt with everything and they didn’t have any proper chances in the second half.

“Will didn’t have a save to make, while their keeper made some great stops from Robbo and Gav – on another day it would have been ‘game over’ earlier.

“But that’s another three points for us, so we got what we came here for. It meant it was a very good day.

“We’re positive and go into every single match believing that we’re going to win, so we want that to keep going.”

Poole’s third goal of the season came when defensive partner Conor Shaughnessy’s header hit him and flew into the net.

He said: “It’s definitely mine, although I have apologised to him because I didn’t know too much about it!

“But they all count and I’m obviously delighted to have scored three times already, even if I didn’t see it coming like that.”
