Pompey now know that victory at Bolton next Saturday would be enough to secure promotion to the Championship.
But Colby Bishop is aware there is still work to be done before they can celebrate achieving the ultimate goal.
The striker netted twice in the side’s latest League One victory – a 3-1 triumph over Shrewsbury at Fratton Park.
It was not a great performance from the Blues, but Bishop insists that points on the board are all that matter right now.
He said: “We probably weren’t at our best and not as tidy as we’d like to have been, while Shrewsbury made it difficult for us.
“In the first 20 minutes we actually moved the ball well, but we needed to be braver and play better football.
"At the start of the season, if you’d offered us 90 points with four games still to go, then we’d be buzzing."
“The result is the main thing at this time of the season, though, and if you get promotion, you don’t look back and think ‘that performance wasn’t good enough’.
“We just need points on the board and we’re getting closer and closer – we’ve got to keep our feet on the floor.
“We’ve got some big players here who turn up for us week in, week out and that’s why we’re doing so well.
“At the start of the season, if you’d offered us 90 points with four games still to go, then we’d be buzzing.
“But we need to keep ticking them off because there’s no use being here if we don’t get the job done.”
Bishop scored a penalty just before the break before being teed-up by Christian Saydee in the second half to reach 20 goals for the season.
He said: “I know that Chris is an intelligent footballer and it was an unbelievable pass from him to see it. I didn’t have to do much after that.”
