Former Stars Make Fratton Return

New Hall of Fame inductee brought the FA Cup

8 April 2024

A host of former Pompey stars took to the Fratton Park pitch at half-time during the 3-1 victory over Shrewsbury on Saturday.

Among them was Hermann Hreiðarsson, who lifted the FA Cup that he helped the Blues win at Wembley back in 2008.

The Icelandic defender had been inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame at a 125th anniversary dinner in the Victory Lounge the previous evening.

He was joined on the Fratton turf by other ex-Pompey players who had served the club across seven decades.

The list also included Benjani, Terry Brisley, Chris Burns, Ray Crawford, Steve Davey, Shaun Gale, Martin Kuhl, Gavin Maguire, John Milkins, Dave Munks, Norman Piper, Darryl Powell, Richie Reynolds, Colin Sullivan, Mick Tait, Dave Waterman and Guy Whittingham.

Leading the procession was Andrew Dickinson, son of the legendary Jimmy, and Jack Froggatt’s son who shares the same name.

They were both in attendance to represent the Pompey side that lifted the top-flight title for the first time in 1949 – which occurred 75 years ago this month.

And there was a poignant moment when the family of Anton Walkes – who tragically passed away in January 2023 at the age of just 25 – took to the pitch.

He was a member of the Blues team that won the EFL Trophy at Wembley in 2019 and before the game, the club presented his mum, Kelly Griffiths, with a 125th anniversary history book, which includes a tribute to Anton.

All the former players and family members had been hosted in the Warrior Lounge prior to kick-off, with many meeting supporters in the lounges and FanZone.
