Mousinho: Still Work To Do

Boss looks ahead to Barnsley test

15 April 2024

Pompey fell short of getting the victory require to secure League One promotion at Bolton on Saturday.

A 1-1 draw did move them another step closer, however, and a point against Barnsley on Tuesday evening would be enough to get over the line.

John Mousinho knows it will not be easy against a Barnsley outfit looking to confirm their spot in the play-offs.

But he hopes that his table-topping side can give the Fratton faithful plenty of reason to cheer on their own patch.

The Blues boss said: “We wanted to get it done as soon as possible, but it was still a positive point for us at Bolton to keep them nine points away from us.

“We’re edging closer to where we all want to be and now we have a chance to do it in front of our own fans at Fratton Park.

“It would be a massive thing for players staff – and, of course, supporters – and I’ve no doubt it would be a special occasion.

“But there’s still a lot of work for us to do because Barnsley are a strong side who have been up there all season.

"It’s a strong squad that we’ve got to select from at the moment, with 24 fit players, and that’s a nice position to be in."

“They’re dangerous and are capable of scoring plenty of goals with their attacking threat, while their performances have been consistent. We’ve got a real task on our hands.

“The big focus for us has been on our recovery and making sure we’re in the best possible place physically.

“The lads have been great with that all season, following up some really tough away trips with some positive results.

“We’ve got to make sure we’re ready to go again against Barnsley and there are no new injuries from the weekend.

“It’s a strong squad that we’ve got to select from at the moment, with 24 fit players, and that’s a nice position to be in.”

Pompey are looking to repeat the feat achieved by the women’s team, who were crowned champions on Sunday when closest rivals Hashtag United lost to Ipswich.

Mousinho said: “It’s an amazing achievement and I know that everyone is thrilled for the side. They’ve put a huge amount of effort in.

“Jay has done a great job this season and from the games I’ve seen, I know we often blow other teams away. It’s a huge boost for the club.”
