Match Preview: Newcastle v Pompey Women

Blues in semi-final action

22 February 2024

Pompey Women will look to book their place in the National League Cup final when they visit Newcastle on Sunday (2pm kick-off).

And the Blues are heading to St James' Park in what is set to be a huge occasion for women's football.

Jay Sadler's enjoyed a battling victory at Ipswich last month to reach this stage of the competition.

Sophie Quirk's early opener was cancelled out by Bonnie Horwood from the spot just before the break.

The tie went to extra-time, with Nicole Barrett's long-range effort in the 94th minute enough to secure a space in the last four.

Pompey have also beaten Ashford Town, Moneyfields and MK Dons on their journey to the semi-finals, with all of their games in the competition coming on the road.

The side go into the contest on the back of a resounding 7-0 success over Chatham last weekend.

Quirk netted twice and Ava Rowbotham bagged a second brace in as many games, while Leeta Rutherford, Emma Jones and Tierney Scott were also on target at Westleigh Park.

Like their opponents, Newcastle sit top of the National League – albeit the Northern Division – having collected 40 points from 15 games.

The Magpies have won 13 and drawn one of their fixtures, with the only defeat coming against Nottingham Forest – the same side who Pompey lost out to in this stage of the League Cup last season.

And on Sunday, they will be hoping to smash their record St James' Park attendance of more than 28,000.

The other semi-final sees Halifax host Hashtag, with the winners set to meet at Luton's Kenilworth Road in March.

The game takes place at the iconic St James' Park, with tickets available to purchase online until 3pm on Saturday (February 24).

Tickets secured online after Thursday (February 22) will need to be collected at St James' Park (Milburn Box Office, Collection Point A).
