Mousinho: A Positive Window

Boss reflects on transfer activity and looks ahead to Northampton test

There was no scrambling to submit a deal sheet before the clock struck 11pm and no takeaways delivered to the offices at Fratton Park.

Instead, Pompey wrapped up their transfer window business at the very start of deadline day to complete a productive month.

The morning confirmation that Owen Moxon had signed from Carlisle added to the previous arrivals of Matt Macey, Myles Peart-Harris, Callum Lang and Tom McIntyre.

And John Mousinho is pleased with how he has been able to strengthen his squad for the final third of the season.

The Blues boss said: “We’ve done a fair bit of business, so we weren’t expecting a hugely frantic deadline day.

“After getting the Oxford game out of the way, my focus was more on preparations for facing Northampton.

“I’m really pleased with the squad and we’ve already seen the impact that some of the new players have had.

“Myles has done ever so well and Callum got the goal on his debut, so that shows the strength we have.

“We think it’s been a really positive window for us and we’ve achieved everything that we set out to do.

“Owen was one of the outstanding players in League Two last season when Carlisle were promoted and someone that everyone had their eye on going into this campaign.

“I thought he had a huge amount to offer when they came to Fratton Park a few months ago and is powerful and athletic, as well as being very good on the ball.”

Pompey host Northampton this weekend, having cruised to a 3-0 victory at Sixfields Stadium when the sides met on a bitterly cold afternoon at the beginning of December.

Mousinho said: “They’re a very different side to the one we faced a few weeks ago and they went on a pretty good run after that.

“I know they lost on Saturday, although that was perhaps down to the circumstances of Shrewsbury having a new manager.

“Outside of those sides fighting for a top six spot, they’re probably one of the outstanding teams in this league.

“Jon Brady and his players have done well after coming up last season, so we’re certainly expecting another tough test.”

Pompey are still waiting to learn how the severity of the injury that forced Joe Morrell off the pitch at Oxford on Tuesday night.

Mousinho said: “He’s going for a scan, so we’ve just taken the precaution of getting the weight off his knee, so he doesn’t do anything to aggravate it further.

“It really is impossible to tell with these ones, so it’s just a case of us waiting to see what the results are.

“Terry Devlin took a knock to the shoulder in the same game. I’m not sure how he’ll be for the weekend, but it’s nothing long-term and Joe Rafferty is fine.”
