Mousinho: We're Not Setting Targets

Boss looks ahead to Charlton test

23 February 2024

Many will be scouring the record books and working out the points tallies required to get out of the League One recent years.

With just 12 matches remaining, Pompey fans are naturally excited about the position of their side at the top of the table.

However, John Mousinho has refused to give an indication of what he believes will be enough to secure a spot in the Championship.

He is not looking past Saturday’s trip to face a Charlton outfit who are now managed by Nathan Jones.

The Blues boss said: “We just need to try to win as many games as possible – you don’t want to set too many targets.

“If you break fixtures down into blocks and work out what you want from them, you might achieve it early and then take your foot off the gas.

“So it’s all about focusing on the next one and Nathan’s sides are always well organised and know exactly what they’re doing

“He’s probably had enough time now to get some good ideas into Charlton and we expect another tough test.

“I think we’ll see a much changed outfit – there were signs of that when they drew up at Bolton last weekend.

“From our point of view, it’s nice to go from Saturday to Saturday because you get some extra time on the grass.

“It also allows us to give the boys a bit more rest after what is always a busy period in the game over Christmas.

“Hopefully it will benefit us towards the end of the season because we’ll have some fresh legs after bolstering the squad in January.”

Mousinho is still waiting to learn the extent of the hamstring injury that forced Tom Lowery off during the recent win over Cambridge.

He said: “Tom hasn’t seen the specialist yet, but we’ll probably have the information on how long he’ll be out for in the next few days.

“Zak Swanson should be training with us at the end of this week or the beginning of the next and it’ll be a real boost to have him back.

“We’ve been cautious with him after surgery. We want to make sure we get it right with him, so he’s fit for the run-in.

“Myles Peart-Harris is recovering nicely and we expect to have him available for Saturday, while everyone else is progressing as expected.”
