Pack Hails Pompey Resurgence

Skipper looking to continue winning run against Reading

16 February 2024

Pompey’s promotion hopes were dented with a run of one win from six matches around the turn of the year.

But the following half-dozen fixtures saw just two points dropped to bring the feelgood factor back to Fratton Park.

Marlon Pack wants that fine form to continue so the League One leaders do not have to rely on other sides slipping up.

And the Blues skipper insists they will be ready to face a Reading outfit who have enjoyed their own encouraging sequence of results to start to pull away from the bottom four.

He said: “It would have been unbelievable to go the whole season with the form we’d shown in the first half – you’d probably see a record points tally.

“As frustrating as that period was, with a few poor performances, it’s testament to the group that we came through that.

“If we continue to play the way we have been doing of late, then we don’t need to worry about what anyone else does.

“Now we face Reading, who are one of the form sides in this division and they’ve created something there, despite all their issues off the field.

“Credit to them for that because they seem to have a siege mentality, so we’ll have to be ready for that.

“Nobody is going to give us an easy game at Fratton Park and it’s a chance for them to make a statement. We’ll do our due diligence and make sure we’re on it.”

Pompey have had to contend with a number of serious injuries in their attempt to reach the Championship.

Tom Lowery became the latest victim when he limped from the pitch during the first half of Tuesday night’s win over Cambridge.

Pack said: “It has been the big topic of conversation lately and we’ve been struck by them once again.

“I feel so sorry for Tom because he’s had a tough season and had got himself into a place where he was in top form.

“We don’t know the extent of it yet and until you get that diagnosis, there’s not much else you can say about it.

“Players just have to step up and be ready. We’re running out of numbers a bit, but that’s why we’ve got a squad and recruited the way we did.”
