Pompey Women 7 Chatham 0

Owners watch convincing win at Westleigh Park

18 February 2024

Pompey Women moved six points clear at the top of the National League table with a 7-0 rout of Chatham at Westleigh Park.

Ava Rowbotham bagged a brace for the second weekend in succession and Sophie Quirk also struck twice, with Leeta Rutherford, Emma Jones and Tierney Scott the others to find the target.

Jane and Michael Eisner – chairs of the women’s and men’s sides respectively – were both in attendance to watch the triumph.

Jay Sadler stuck with the same side that eased to victory at Oxford the previous Sunday, with Dani Lane continuing to deputise in the centre of defence.

And the hosts soon made their attacking intentions clear by looking to get at their struggling opponents.

Rowbotham had a chance to break the deadlock after being teed-up by Georgie Freeland, but Cara Davies was equal to her effort from the edge of the box.

Quirk then latched onto a wayward pass inside the area and pulled back for Rowbotham to have a shot cleared from the line.

The opportunities kept coming and when Nicole Barrett found Jones in the centre, her effort was deflected over the bar.

But the pressure did pay off on 14 minutes, as Jones sent a corner towards the back post for RUTHERFORD to tap into the net.

That was the cue for the floodgates to open, with Quirk soon surging down the left and cutting the ball back for ROWBOTHAM to find the target.

ROWBOTHAM struck again just a few seconds later, this time smashing a close-range shot past Davies when the ball broke for her inside the box.

Pompey continued to dominate, although things began to calm down slightly midway through the first half.

But the contest exploded back into life as the interval approached, with QUIRK arriving at the back stick to turn home a Jones delivery.

The roles were then reversed when Rutherford stole possession and Quirk threaded a pass through for JONES to convert.

Half Time: Pompey 5 Chatham 0

The hosts looked to continue where they had left off when the action restarted and soon had a sixth goal.

It was a second of the afternoon for QUIRK, who beat a player on the right, drove purposefully inside and fired a low shot into the bottom corner.

Daisy McLachlan was looking to add her name to the scoresheet and curled the ball against the crossbar following a sharp turn on the left.

She then stole the ball back inside the box, but Quirk could not quite capitalise on her delivery into the mixer.

With the game already won and a cup semi-final up next, Sadler turned to his bench to freshen things up.

And it was one of the five players introduced who wrapped up a resounding victory with five minutes remaining.

SCOTT picked the ball up wide on the right and surged inside before hitting a fierce effort that left Davies with no chance.

The game then wound down for the closing stages and with Hashtag United not in league action, the result ensured Pompey were able to increase their lead at the summit.

Pompey: Haughton (c); Barrett (Wild 71), Lane, Casley (Humphrey 80), Collins; Rowbotham, Rutherford (Hall 60), Freeland; McLachlan (Scott 80), Jones (Pitman 46), Quirk
