Pompey showed a clinical touch to romp to a 5-1 victory against Bristol Rovers in their latest Youth Alliance League contest.

They took an early lead at Furze Lane when Connor May chested the ball down and volleyed it into the net from close range.

And the hosts doubled their advantage before the break, as Sam Folarin kept his cool to chip over the onrushing keeper.

A third goal arrived in the second half when Mitch Aston’s free-kick was turned into the net by a Rovers player.

The Blues soon embarked on a neat team move that saw Dan Murray collect May’s pass and cross for Folarin to convert at the neat post.

Harry Clout then drilled home a fifth before the visitors restored some pride by grabbing a late consolation.

Lead professional development phase coach Sam Hudson said: “It was a good performance and our pressing – from first whistle to last – was particularly impressive.

"There were plenty of good individual displays across the pitch, but in terms of units, we were really solid. There were some excellent combinations."

“We went through the numbers afterwards and it was up there with the most we had run during a game.

“It meant we could regain the ball in dangerous areas and allow our attacking players to cause plenty of problems.

“Alternatively, Bristol Rovers would try to play over the press and then our back four won a lot of their duels before finding the midfield.

“There were plenty of good individual displays across the pitch, but in terms of units, we were really solid. There were some excellent combinations.

“The fourth goal was probably my favourite of the bunch because it was a great team move and something we’d worked on in training. It’s aways nice when you take that into a match situation.

“The only disappointing thing was that we conceded right at the very end to deny us a clean sheet, but that’s being a bit picky.

“It was a really dominant performance and we scored five goals, while we could have added a few more.”
