And Colby Bishop’s goal in a 2-1 win over Stevenage at Fratton Park was his 13th of what is turning out to be another prolific campaign.
But it was his first from open play for just over two months – a record that has earned some criticism, although largely on social media, rather than from fans at games.
Bishop was always confident that he would rediscover his shooting boots, however, and was delighted to help the Blues return to winning ways.
The striker said: “It always feels good to win, but especially so after a frustrating run of results for us of late.
“I scored one like that against Bolton last season, although that was a lot slower, but it was a nice goal and I’m going to enjoy watching it back.
"I’ve scored 13 goals by January 1, so I don’t think I’m doing too bad, although obviously you can always do better."
“That grit and determination we’ve shown all season has paid off. We’re top of the league and hopefully we can stay there.
“Strikers always go through patches when they don’t score, but I’ll always back myself to get back on the wagon.
“Sometimes my performances haven’t been as good, although from the day I put on a Pompey shirt, I’ve always given 100 per cent.
“That will be the case for as long as I’m at the club. I can only do my talking on the pitch – and I think I did that.
“The gaffer has been brilliant with me and has backed me from day one, which is something I really appreciate.
“I’ve scored 13 goals by January 1, so I don’t think I’m doing too bad, although obviously you can always do better.”
