Macey Makes Pompey Return

Blues sign former loan keeper

12 January 2024

Pompey have signed goalkeeper Matt Macey on a deal until the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

It sees the 29-year-old return to Fratton Park after spending the second half of last season on loan at the club from Luton.

He made 21 League One appearances and kept nine clean sheets – including on his debut in a 2-0 home win over Exeter.

Blues boss John Mousinho said: “Matt was my first signing after arriving at the club almost a year ago and I’m delighted to bring him back here.

“He did an excellent job for us last season and it really strengthens our goalkeeping unit because we know that he’s an outstanding shot-stopper.”

Macey progressed through the ranks at Arsenal and was on the bench when they won the FA Cup at Wembley in 2020.

He made a couple of senior appearances for the Gunners and gained experience with spells on loan at Accrington, Luton and Plymouth.

Macey switched to Hibs at the start of 2021 and saved a penalty in the Scottish Cup final later that year, although it was not enough to prevent a 1-0 defeat to St Johnstone.

He then returned to Championship outfit Luton, this time on a permanent basis, but left the Hatters last summer.
