Mousinho: We Were Awful

Boss reflects on defeat to Leyton Orient

13 January 2024

John Mousinho did not attempt to sugarcoat a dreadful afternoon on the south coast for Pompey.

Shaq Forde, Jordan Brown and Dan Agyei all struck in the latter part of the first half to seal a 3-0 win for Leyton Orient.

And the third of those goals came after Colby Bishop had seen a penalty saved by visiting stopper Sol Brynn.

They never really threatened a fightback after the break and Mousinho was angry with what he saw from his side.

The Blues boss said: “I thought we were awful. We just weren’t good enough – even when we huffed and puffed in the second half.

“The start was okay, but it’s not enough for us to be alright for just 25 minutes. We conceded and then we went under.

"That was the first time this season when we were completely unrecognisable. We were totally lacking."

“To go in 3-0 down at the break after what had been a fairly even first half summed up where we were.

“We didn’t create enough when we got into the final third and we didn’t defend our box well enough when we needed to.

“Our job is to dust ourselves down, reconvene as a staff and nail down the reasons why we were so poor, then do something about it.

“The message to the boys is that the season can go one of two ways and we’re still in a fantastic position.

“By hook or by crook, we’re top of the league and that gives us something to hold on to. It’s easy to be negative and there are 19 games left to show what we can do.

“But that was the first time this season when we were completely unrecognisable. We were totally lacking.

“I thought that Tom Lowery coming through 45 minutes and playing pretty well was the positive of the day.”
