Pompey Academy were beaten in a hard-fought Youth Alliance League contest with Oxford at Copnor Road.

A side that included players from the under-16 and under-15 squads conceded in the second half to slip to defeat.

Lead professional development phase coach Sam Hudson said: “There wasn’t a lot to separate the sides, although we perhaps edged it on total shots.

“It was almost identical in terms of final third and penalty box entries and it was certainly a close game.

“We did have the ball in the back of the net in the first half, but it was disallowed by the referee for a foul.

“There were brief moments of quality that led to chances that we really needed to take when it was so tight.

“After a bright start from us when we had Oxford on the back foot, their only real opportunities came on the counter.

"We deserved to score because neither side really did enough to win the match. Sometimes, though, you fall the wrong side of those fine margins in football."

“We said at the break that we were relatively pleased, but we then conceded after they pounced on a sloppy error from us. That was their big moment and they took it.

“The game became quite open after that and following a period when we were perhaps feeling a bit sorry for ourselves, we rallied and created some promising moments.

“Their keeper made some good saves and there were a few key blocks, but we just couldn’t get that equaliser.

“I think we deserved to score because neither side really did enough to win the match. Sometimes, though, you fall the wrong side of those fine margins in football.

“But we were quite makeshift. We had the right-footed Brian Quarm at left-back, but he was magnificent for us with his defending and getting forward when he could.

“There were also guys who will be part of the squad next season getting their first exposure to under-18s football and we were pleased with their efforts.”

Pompey: Osei-Owusu; Ani, Buckland, Howard, Quarm; Mottoh (May 46), Murray, Clout, Chioma (Agu 73); Hurst (Sizer 73), Folarin
